Famous Paintings Of The Impressionist Period

Perhaps one of the most famous paintings in the impressionist period is the one that supplied this movement with its name: Impression, soleil levant by Claude Monet. It was, however, only after an exhibition in April 1874 that a review entitled "The Exhibition of the Impressionists" by one Louis Leroy brought the artistic manifestation of this movement into the public spotlight, and thus giving birth to what we know today as impressionism.

Characteristic of Impression, soleil levant is that it seemed unfinished and lacking in detail to the critics of that time, a quality which is at the very centre of impressionism as it suggests rather than states; it is the essence of something rather than an actual depiction.

Another eminent ingredient of impressionism arose from the principle that beauty and truth remains something largely subjective. Where a conventional belief system promulgated the concept of a divine beauty and an eternal, perhaps religious essence to all things; impressionism sought to depict the experience and opinion of the artist instead of that which was expected. An example of this can perhaps be more clearly seen in Manet, who professed "I paint what I see, and not what others like to see" and is manifest in some of his works such as Le déjeuner sur l'herbe.

Worthy of note about the aforementioned work is that Manet submitted it at the Salon de Paris at which it was rejected on the grounds that it contained a nude woman in a contemporary setting, as opposed to the usual allegorical or historical settings. Another interesting fact about Edouard Manet is that he never really regarded himself as an impressionist, even thought he is widely regarded as such all over the world.

Further examples of great impressionist work include those by Jacob-Abraham-Camille Pissarro who, after 1870, relied on his paintings for an income but unfortunately died in poverty. It was only after his death that Pissarro"s works attained great monetary value. Camille Pissarro is widely regarded as the "father of impressionism" with some of his more famous works including Le verger, Gelee blanche and Les chataigniers a Osny.

Perhaps most notable about Pissarro is the fact that he always entertained a passion for political anarchy, something which could possibly be identified through his empathy with labourers and peasants in scenes around Montmartre and Pontoise.

Other famous works by impressionist painters include Calvary on The Côte de Grâce, Honfleur by Camille Corot, By the sea by Auguste Renoir, Beach at Sainte-Adresse by Claude Monet, A woman ironing by Edgar Degas, Lydia Leaning on Her Arms in a theatre box by Mary Cassatt, Bridge at Villeneuve-la-Garenne by Alfred Sisley.
