Famous Impressionist painters

Throughout the ages mankind has always advanced most notably with the aid of a singular venerable catalyst: Freedom. In the world of art, it was that most profound of human desires that inspired a group of artists to give rise to a new movement that would soon spread throughout the world: Impressionism. And like all such movements throughout the course of history, there are now only a handful of those who remain devout to its philosophy throughout their lives.

In relation to impressionism, some of the many who could be regarded as its true champions include Claude Monet, Berthe Morisot, Alfred Sisley and Camille Pissarro. Naturally it is only upon close inspection that we see why these artists are awarded such esteemed positions within history.

Claude Monet

Claude Monet can perhaps be seen as a founding member of impressionism, mainly due to the fact that the name for the movement was derived from the title of one of his paintings called Impression, soleil levant. Monet is regarded as one of the most passionate pursuers of the philosophy of the impressionist movement, which gave ground to the concept of personal perception before nature.

Camille Pissarro

Camille Pissarro, born Jacob-Abraham-Camille Pissarro, is widely regarded as the "father of impressionism". During his early life he was attracted to political anarchy, something which may have contributed to his esteemed rise within the movement. Pissarro focused mainly on landscape settings in his paintings, trying to capture rural and urban French life and is one of the only impressionist artists to be present at all eight of the impressionist exhibitions.

Alfred Sisley

Alfred Sisley was born in Paris to wealthy English parents and was one of the few members of the impressionistic movement to never deviate from its true philosophy. Some liken his work to a more generic version of Pissarro, something which can be seen as impressionism in its truest form. Sisley's work never earned him money which, as a result, saw him die in poverty. It was only after his death that his works started accumulating immense monetary value.

Berthe Morisot

Berthe Morisot can be seen as both a champion among the impressionists and also as a possible victim of gender-based bias of those times. Her work mainly focussed on her own day-to-day experiences and family settings and included landscapes, garden scenes and portraits using her own friends and family as models in situations that would appeal to a female audience. Morisot's work remained undervalued for more than a century after her death.
